Girls 5th/6th Grade: Spring Season is Complete!
by posted 06/13/2017

Girls 5th/6th Graders:

The White team played their final game of the spring season today against Brighton so our spring season is officially complete! While the beginning of the season got off to a rough start due to the weather, I think we finished very strongly with a few extra games and our end-of-season party.

From what I could tell, everybody had a good time this season. Everybody got a lot of playing time and improved their skills and knowledge of the game. I am very happy that we had many players completely new to lacrosse. I promise that it is NOT too late, even as a 6th-grader. The key to success at this level is to get good at passing and catching on the move. The more time spent passing and catching on your own, the better you will be. It's just like daily practice of scales for a musical instrument.

I encourage you to share any feedback you might have on any aspect of the program, including the coaches, practices, team selection, schedules, communications, website, mobile app, etc. Coaches are NOT allowed to say good things about each other to feel good about themselves. :-)

SUMMER

I am still hoping to do something this summer. If we do, it will most likely be a once-a-week session focused on stick skills and fundamentals, along with some small-sided games. This will be particularly valuable for the newer and less-experienced players. In the meantime, remember to check out the Camps/Clinics page on our website for some camps to consider. I strongly recommend the Pittsford camp which is for girls who are currently in grades 1-6.

FALL

The next major program will be in the fall for grades K-6. Expect to start hearing about it in August. It will most likely involve one or two practices per week, along with a tournament or two, and possibly a game or two against other towns.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

  1. We have extra pairs of shorts available for purchase for $20 per pair. Let me know if you would like to buy an extra pair. They make good gifts for siblings, as well.
  2. If you borrowed goggles or a stick, please make arrangements to return them. You may drop them off at my house at 16 Meadow Cove Rd, Pittsford, NY 14534 (off of Rte 31 next to the post office).
  3. Goggles and sticks are also available for purchase at good prices. Let me know if interested.
  4. If you have any friends who are interested in trying lacrosse, please give them my information or refer them to me so I can follow up with them. We would love to have more girls in every grade, particularly K-2.

And finally, and most important, I would like to extend a HUUUUGE THANK YOU to all of the coaches (Jeff Calabrese, Mike Camarella, Tom Cincebox, Mike Culhane, Ryan Madigan, and Glenn Wallace). Our boys and girls youth programs take a LOT of effort to organize and run and we would not be successful without the coaches and their investment in the program. However, the investment eventually pays off at the scholastic level where both our boys and girls varsity teams played in the state championship games this past Saturday, and the girls won the first Class A state championship for a Section V girls team. Please be sure to thank the coaches.

Have a great summer! I'm Mike Cross. You stay classy, Pittsford!

Girls 5th/6th Grade Laxers:

I hope everybody had a great time last night. The weather was gorgeous and there was plenty of space for the kids to play. Thanks so much for bringing all the food!

The White team has a game on Tuesday, June 13, at Barker Road Middle School. Be at the field by 6:00 PM. All details are on the website under the Girls Info tab: http://pittsfordlacrosse.org/Page.asp?n=109022&org=PITTSFORDLACROSSE.ORG

I'm also still looking for a couple of more games in June. Stay tuned. In the meantime, play catch as much as possible. For the 6th-graders interested in Modified (i.e., 7th/8th grade scholastic), passing and catching on the run are critical. The ability to do these skills are very much appreciated by the coaches.

SHORTS

We have extra shorts in different sizes from this season that we are offering for purchase for $20 each. Reply to this email if you would like to buy an extra pair or two.

LOST AND FOUND

Finally, somebody left a pair of black goggles. Reply to this email to let me know if they are yours.

Girls 5th/6th Grade: All family members invited to party
by posted 06/07/2017

Girls 5th/6th Grade Laxers:

In case there is any confusion, ALL family members are invited to the end-of-season party tomorrow. Siblings, grandparents, etc. are all welcome. The more, the merrier.

So far, only 3 players can't attend, leaving 39 who can. I'm estimating an average of 3.14159265359 people per family, or about 120 people. Should be lots of fun!

Girls 5th/6th Grade: Party Plans
by posted 06/06/2017

Girls 5th/6th Grade Laxers:

Our end-of-season intra-squad scrimmage and party at Thornell Farm Park is on Thursday night, 6:00-9:00 PM. As far as I know, just about every player will be there. Let me know if you will not be there for any inexcusable reason.

PCLI will take care of the pizza (any requests for anchovies will be flatly denied!). I'll also make sure we have drinks and supplies (napkins, paper plates, cups, plasticware, etc.). I'm requesting that families bring the following based on the first letter of their last name:

  • A-C: Dessert (gotta start with dessert!)
  • D-L: Appetizer/Snack/Side (bonus points for variety and creativity)
  • M-Z: Salad (greens, beans, macaroni, potato, etc.). It's a great opportunity to use that salad shooter you never use.

Let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, I'll see you Thursday!

Girls 5/6 Weekend Recap and Upcoming Schedule
by posted 06/04/2017

Girls 5th/6th Laxers:

I hope you were one of the lucky ones to play lacrosse this weekend, especially yesterday in the gorgeous weather.

Yesterday, we had a team in the VERY competitive Roc the Towns tournament at Nazareth College. This tournament is run-and-gun format with no draws after goals on a short field (8v8). Most games had scores in the high teens or even low twenties. Playing very good teams from Fairport, Corning, Canandaigua, and Victor/Irondequoit, the team went 3-1 and captured the championship (check out the photo of the team in the home page banner and Roc the Towns team page). Congratulations, team!

Today, we had some players in the Muddy's Buddies tournament. I wasn't there, but I heard that the team played very well, having trouble only with a good Brighton team. In addition, it's quite possible that we've discovered a new goalie in 5th-grader Teagan Culhane. Way to go Teagan!

So what's next?

  • Tuesday, June 6: NO practice or game. Take a break, but keep the stick in your hand. Take the Wallball Challenge that I emailed about on Friday. Get those reps in!
  • Thursday, June 8: End-of-season intra-squad scrimmage and party at Thornell Farm Park. I'm thinking we will order some pizza and have families bring sides, desserts, drinks, supplies, etc. Stay tuned for an email detailing what to bring.
  • Tuesday, June 13: Game for White team against Brighton at Barker Road Middle School, 6:30 PM (be at field by 6:00 PM).
  • I'm working on scheduling another game or two or three in June for whomever is available. I really want everybody to get as much playing time as possible.

As for summer, based on availability of players and coaches, we will probably not do anything, unless I can find time to run sessions for fundamental stick skills (i.e., LOTS of passing, catching, dodging, shooting, and ground balls). I really want to do this because it's so helpful. Stay tuned.

Finally, I strongly recommend attending a camp or two, especially the Pittsford Lacrosse camp at Sutherland. A few of the camps that I'm aware of are on the Camps/Clinics page on our website. Get a friend or two to go with you, even if she has not played lacrosse. All of these camps are good for both beginners and experienced players. We even have sticks and goggles available for purchase and borrowing for new players. They just have to ask.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or other feedback.

See you Thursday!

Girls 3/4 and 5/6 Muddy's Buddies Update
by posted 06/03/2017

For all 3/4 and 5/6 girls playing in the Muddy's Buddies tournament at Brighton tomorrow, the weather forecast is not great for tomorrow but plan on the games going on as scheduled. The turf field should be fine but we will likely have to fight some rain throughout the day. In the event of thunder/lightning, the games will be suspended for 30 minutes and then will likely start back up on schedule with some games being canceled. All of that information will be communicated over the PA system at the event. If games are stopped due to weather, please do NOT leave until you hear from your coach. Expect communications to be done via the SI Play app which also sends emails and text messages.

For the 3/4 teams playing in the morning, parking will be limited in the Brighton High School parking lot as the Brighton Farmers Market will be going on until 1:00 pm on June 4th. Your best parking option will be behind the Brighton Central Office and Twelve Corners Middle School at 2035 Monroe Avenue, 14618.  All of the games will be played on the stadium turf field which is directly adjacent to that lot. Cleats, turf shoes or sneakers are all appropriate footwear.

Finally, there is room for tents, so feel free to bring a tent for some protection against the elements. Just check in at the t-shirt tent when you arrive and someone can direct you from there.

Girls Youth: Join the Wallball Challenge!
by posted 06/02/2017

Girls Youth Laxers:

Want to improve your passing and catching while competing for prizes from Pittsford Lacrosse? Join the US Lacrosse Wallball Challenge currently running through June 30! All details are here (be sure you check out the FAQs at the bottom of the page): http://www.uslacrosse.org/players/wallball-challenge

When you create your account and login, use the appropriate team code in the table below so we can track your reps.
Note that your device must always be connected to a wireless network for the app to function correctly.

Just find a wall, rebounder, or partner and get going. Not sure what do do, or getting bored? Try this routine. Mix it up as much as necessary, or split it up into multiple sessions, but be sure you get plenty of time playing both righty and lefty. Also, pay attention to technique. It's better to do fewer reps with perfect technique than a lot of reps with poor technique. This challenge is about getting better, not just doing a lot of reps.

  • 3 minutes Throw Right, Catch Right
  • 3 minutes Throw Left, Catch Left
  • 3 Minutes Throw Right, Catch Left (switch hands after throwing the ball and before it comes back)
  • 3 Minutes Throw Left, Catch Right (switch hands after throwing the ball and before it comes back)
  • 90 seconds Behind the Back Left, Catch in front
  • 90 seconds Behind the Back Right, Catch in front
  • 90 seconds Throw Right Cross-face, Catch Right
  • 90 seconds Throw Left Cross-face, Catch Left
  • 90 seconds Throw Right, Catch Right Cross-face
  • 90 seconds Throw Left, Catch Left Cross-face

What are the prizes you ask? I have no clue! I'll figure something out for at least the top 3 girls on each team. If you have ideas or donations (e.g., gift cards, etc.) then let me know. The more donations we get, the more prizes we can give. Although the BEST prize is improved skills.

Now go get balling!

Girls Youth: Opportunities to Watch Lacrosse this Weekend
by posted 05/25/2017

Girls Youth Laxers:

Memorial Day weekend is here and that means it's time to watch some lacrosse instead of playing!

The Pittsford Girls Varsity team kicks off the Section V Class A tournament on Saturday, 11:00 AM. They play Fairport, at Honeoye Falls High School, 83 East St, Honeoye Falls, NY 14472. Wear your Pittsford gear and come cheer the team as they look to do even better than their state finalist showing last year! Note that I think there might be a small admission fee for sectional games, so have some cash just in case.

On Friday are the Section V Class B semi-finals at Pittsford Sutherland High School. It's Brighton vs. Webster Thomas, at 5:00 PM, and Canandaigua vs. Spencerport at 7:00 PM. If you happen to be available, check it out. Here is the bracket: http://glaxfive.net/tournaments/brackets/bracket_form.php?class=B

This weekend is the NCAA D1 women's championship. The semi-final games are on ESPN3 (streamed online) on Friday, May 26, at 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM. The championship game is on ESPNU (TV) on Sunday, May 28, at 11:00 AM. Here is the bracket: http://www.ncaa.com/interactive-bracket/lacrosse-women/d1. Get some friends together and watch these amazing athletes compete.

Remember that all of the high school and college athletes you see used to play in youth programs, or even possibly started in middle school. In other words, they were just like your daughters are now. Let's keep the game fun for our girls and they will continue to play and improve year after year.

Enjoy the weekend!

Girls 5th/6th Grade: White Team Games Next Week
by posted 05/25/2017

Girls 5th/6th Grade White Team:

Here are the pages with the information for our two games next week:

Please check the rosters for both games and let me know if anything is different than what is listed. For example, if you are on the roster but are not available, then let me know so I can move your name to the list of unavailable players. Just reply to this email.

Don't worry if the number of players on the roster seems too big. I've already made arrangements for longer games, if necessary, so everybody will get plenty of playing time. Alternatively, we could possibly go 8v8 on smaller fields and play two games concurrently. We'll see how it all plays out. First, I need to know who is definitely available.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. I'll send info on the NCAA women's lacrosse championships in a separate email. I hope you can watch them.

After our game against Rush-Henrietta tomorrow, the White team will still practice and play at least one more game at HFL on Tuesday, May 30. I'm also looking for at least one more game for the White team. In addition, available players will play in the Muddy's Buddies tournament on Sunday, June 4. More details will be sent to those players as we get closer to the date.

GANANDA TOURNAMENT ON JUNE 17
So far, we have only 6 girls available for the Gananda tournament on Saturday, June 17. Some girls are not available due to a soccer tournament that weekend. Girls 5th/6th Grades: Opportunity for Gananda Tournament on 6/17
by posted 05/22/2017

Girls 5th/6th Graders:

The organizers of the Gananda Youth Lacrosse Tournament have contacted me about registering a Pittsford 5/6 team. The tournament is on Saturday, June 17, at Dolomite Park in Walworth, NY. I don't know times yet.

If there is enough interest and if we can get a coach, then we can have a team. Please reply to this email if you are interested. This is 12v12 so we would need at least 15 players. This is NOT part of the spring season so there is an extra cost of about $10-15 per player, depending on the number of players.

Girls 5th/6th Grade: Wrap up from play day
by posted 05/21/2017

Girls 5th/6th Players:

I hope everybody had a GREAT time at our play day yesterday. The weather was perfect, the fields were in good shape, and the games were competitive. I hope you took some photos of your daughter playing.

LOST AND FOUND

The Brighton 5/6 coach found what looks like an anklet/bracelet on the sideline after their second game at Field 2 (the one farther from the parking lot). Let me know if it's yours.

SCHEDULE FOR THIS WEEK

We have practice on Tuesday, 6:00-7:00 PM, at Barker Road Middle School. We then have games on Thursday. The Blue team will be at Irondequoit at 7:00 PM and the White team will be at Barker Road Middle School against Rush-Henrietta at 6:30 PM (always arrive 30 minutes prior to game start). We will have the rosters finalized by the end of the day tomorrow (Monday). Please let me know if you are unavailable for any reason. So far, I know of only Stella Burtner and Logan Madigan because of a concert at Mendon Center. Check your calendars!

END-OF-SEASON PARTY PLANS

I'm looking to reserve the turf field and pavilion at Thornell Farm Park for our end-of-season party. I'm thinking we can have an intra-squad scrimmage and picnic. Looks like it's not available on Tuesday, June 6, but is available on Thursday, June 8. I'll check with the town tomorrow. In the meantime, let me know if Thursday, June 8, is not good for. I'm not expecting 100% availability, but certainly want as many players as possible. Stay tuned for more details and let me know ASAP about your availability.

by posted 05/16/2017

Girls 5th/6th Graders:

Thanks to Hanna Davis' grandfather, Tom Deyle, we've uploaded to the team website some photos from the early game at Cinco de Laxo. Check them out here: http://pittsfordlacrosse.org/Pictures.asp?isteam=1&org=PITTSFORDLACROSSE.ORG

Feel free to send me any photos you might want to see on the website. The girls love to see them.

Also, I encourage taking lots of photos in general. Time flies and we don't always realize how quickly these girls are growing up.

Girls 5th/6th: Minor update on Canandaigua on Saturday, May 13
by posted 05/10/2017

Girls 5th/6th Graders:

A couple of minor changes have been made to the schedule and rosters for the play day at Canandaigua on Saturday, May 13.

Blue team plays at 10:00 AM and 10:50 AM, which is basically the same. However, the White team now plays at 1:20 PM and 2:10 PM, so their first game is starting a bit later, there is now no break between games, and the second game is starting a bit earlier. Makes it even better for the soccer players commuting between Irondequoit and Canandaigua.

All details are here: http://pittsfordlacrosse.org/Page.asp?n=108759&org=PITTSFORDLACROSSE.ORG

We had a good practice at Great Embankment Park last night. The field was in good condition and the weather relatively warm. Felt good! I expect that we will be able to practice as scheduled at Barker Road Middle School tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed.

Pittsford Girls 5th/6th Graders:

We finally have all details finalized for our play day at Canandaigua this Saturday, May 13. Like us, Canandaigua has been having trouble with their grass fields. We will play on the new turf field in their stadium behind the school. It's very nice. You can wear sneakers, turf shoes, or cleats.

See the page on our website under the Girls Info tab for details. Here is a direct link:

http://pittsfordlacrosse.org/Page.asp?n=108759&org=PITTSFORDLACROSSE.ORG

PLEASE identify your team and note the schedule. Let me know ASAP if you cannot make any part of the play day.

Be at the Canandaigua Academy at least 30 minutes prior to your first game.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Girls Grades 1-6: Update on Cinco de Laxo
by posted 05/05/2017

Girls Grades 1-6:

I received official word that the Cinco de Laxo tournament is postponed until next Sunday, May 14 (Mother's Day), due to field conditions. The same schedule and field locations apply.

I know this is not the best situation as this is the same weekend as Mother's Day and the Irondequoit soccer tournament. PLEASE let your coach or me know ASAP if you have any restrictions in your schedule. We will make necessary adjustments.

The tournament info is on this page: http://pittsfordlacrosse.org/Page.asp?n=108697&org=PITTSFORDLACROSSE.ORG. For the 1st/2nd graders, you have an email from Ashton Maaraba with the details.

Pittsford Girls Lacrosse: Update on Fields and Practice
by posted 05/02/2017

Girls 5th/6th Graders:

Fields are closed for today. There is NO practice tonight. We will get another update tomorrow.

By the way, we have contingency plans in place in case we cannot play at Barker Road MS on Saturday. Instead, we would play at Brighton's Meridian Centre Park (http://www.townofbrighton.org/264/Meridian-Centre-Park) at the same times. We will wait until the last minute before activating the contingency plans. We really want to play at Barker Road, if at all possible.

Also, we need to finalize the team rosters for this weekend. I know that some girls are not available due to a soccer tournament. PLEASE let me know ASAP if you will not be available on either Saturday afternoon, or anytime Sunday for the Cinco de Laxo tournament (we are still waiting for the schedule for the tournament - should have it later today or tomorrow).

As we had mentioned previously, our team rosters are not fixed for every game. We will select teams based on various factors, including who are our opponents, player availability, player development, etc. We will publish the rosters for Saturday tomorrow, so please let me know if you are not going to make it. Just reply to this email.

Let me know if you have any questions.
